Antimicrobial technology destroys and prevents the growth of microbes and bacteria. An antimicrobial coating is a coating treated with an antimicrobial substance that prevents the growth of microbes on a surface. When applied to a surface or material, the antimicrobial coating inhibits microbial growth and reduces the spread of infectious diseases. Compared to cleaning products that are applied to surfaces by hand, antimicrobial technology provides permanent around-the-clock protection from microbes. Antimicrobial technology is not designed to replace the use of disinfectants, instead, they are meant to improve the effectiveness of disinfectants and keep surfaces cleaner in between cleanings. Antimicrobial substances can be implemented into a vast array of materials and objects including plastics, paint, metal, textiles, and monitors.

How does Antimicrobial Technology work?

Antimicrobial technology works by disrupting the cellular growth and reproduction of microorganisms when it comes in contact with an antimicrobial treated surface. The antimicrobials disrupt the growth of microbes by targeting the protein, cell membrane, internal systems, and DNA of the microbe.

Types of Antimicrobial Technologies

The antimicrobial substance typically contains one of these ingredients: silver ion antimicrobials, zinc antimicrobials, or copper antimicrobials.

Silver Ion Antimicrobials

Silver ion antimicrobials contain a silver-based active ingredient that inhibits the metabolism of a microbe, preventing it from reproducing. Silver ion antimicrobials can be implemented into many different materials, such as coatings and textiles, and have been used for doorknobs, medical equipment, and food storage containers.

Zinc Antimicrobials

Zinc antimicrobials contain a zinc-based ingredient that destroys the cell wall of the microbe, preventing it from growing and reproducing. Zinc antimicrobials do not only prevent bacterial growth, but it also reduces the growth of fungi (mold, mildew, and algae). Zinc antimicrobials can be used in flooring, paint, and textiles.

Copper Antimicrobials
Copper antimicrobials contain a copper-based ingredient that attacks a microbe through oxidation, killing it when it comes in contact with a surface coated with copper antimicrobials. Copper antimicrobials can be used for preservation or for medical products.

Benefits of Antimicrobial Coating in the Industry

  • 24/7 Protection Against Bacteria - Inhibits the growth of bacteria up to 99.99% and is resistant against MRSA, E.coli, and VRE.
  • Reduces Stain and Odor-Causing Bacteria - Reduces the growth of stain and order-causing bacteria that may cause structural damage. It also helps to keep materials cleaner
  • Cleaner Surfaces - Surfaces are able to remain cleaner in between cleanings and reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Eco-Friendly - Reduces the use of harsh cleaning agents that may cause irritation and respiratory issues.
